Small town Koloa, in southern Kauai, was once the base for a flourishing sugar plantation. The sugar mill opened in 1835 and set the precedent for commercial sugar production across the islands. Koloa has retained much of its old charm with many plantation buildings in the area, giving it an “Old West” feel.
Stroll by Koloa’s old-fashioned storefronts and shop for special gifts or island souvenirs. Get an ice cream cone and enjoy it under the shade of the large monkey pod trees. Then stop by the Koloa History Center or visit the Sugar Monument to learn about Koloa’s sweet heritage.
Head to the south shore of Kauai to visit one of America's best beaches (The "Travel Channel" recently named Poipu America's Best Beach). The picturesque waters of Poipu make it a very popular beach, even with local marine life. Large green sea turtles often swim in these waters, while endangered Hawaiian Monk seals have been known to sunbathe unabashedly on the shore.
Grab a snorkel and mask and explore Poipu's sheltered coves. Snorkel in adjacent Nukumoi Point to see colorful varieties of fish. Or simply pack a picnic and spend the day at Poipu Beach Park with the family. There's no better way to end your day in Kauai than watching a stunning sunset in Poipu.
